...as I alluded to at the end of chapter 1, Raymond Barr had decided to relinquish control of Newton Stewarts no1(only) scooter club....the question on the nations lips was....who would replace him? Well, the quick answer is me,for the following reasons...nobody else wanted to!!!! First act was to appoint my team ...who could ah choose? Given that the list of active club members now stood at the healthy number of 3, this decision proved fairly easy...Peter Goonie McCleary would b treasurer and his brother ,Dav McCleary, would b secretary ;D Now u may think that it would b quite a daunting thought to run the nations favourite rally with such a small number, however, youd b wrong...complete ignorance of the task ahead took all the pressure off ;D We decided that for the next rally we"d advertise it as the 5th and final Whisky Galore ,with the club hiring local eccentric and exhibitionist Mr Barradale Strachan as a male model for that years flyers..and a great success they were, Mr Strachans bare buttocks proving very popular ;D The rally came and again everyone seemed happy, despite a piss poor performance from the band ,the same band who had been fantastic the year before The Sunday mornin seen us facing the new regimes 1st big problem...the brand new marquee we"d hired had been ripped on both sides leadin to a loss of that years profits an a fraud investigation by an insurance company A feature of Whisky Galore had always been value for money and we carried this on by deciding to give away a free rally patch ,as well as a free half on entry...along with keepin the price down at a tenner This may have been a bit silly on our part as it would have been very easy to increase profits by droppin these things and increasin the price as most others did but none of us wanted to go down that line, rightly so in my opinion . Ahl take this opportunity to point out that contrary to some reports ,the rally usually only made a small profit...we didnt get the 4 to 500 some said we got, exact numbers werent kept but as an indicator only 200 to 220 patches were bought an not once did we run out. There would b no falling out over money in this club Anyway, onwards an upwards, the threat of it bein the final rally was removed and the date was set for 2004. This ,in my opinion, was the best of the bunch, great weather, great band, just fantastic ;D A feature of WG ,for those who didnt make it ,was the the marquee...it went on til 4 or 5 in the mornin on the friday nite an about 3 on the saturday...u soon learned to pitch ure tent well down the field ;D Apart from the rally we kept our appearances upat as many rallies as we could, crossing the water to Ireland once or twice a year..Bangor in March will, infact ,be mah 19th trip over on a scooter What would the future hold...who knows...ah do, and it includes someting that ah dont think any other scooter club has achieved
